Meet our people
Meet Carl. He joined Royal Mail as a mobile cleaner 21 years ago, and now manages a team of 33 staff as a Soft Services Manager. The learning and development opportunities available at Royal Mail have helped him grow in his role, overcome setbacks, and continuously develop skills to achieve his career goals.
Lorem ipsum
"I started with Royal Mail in 2003 as a mobile cleaner, covering the two postcode areas. This role taught me a lot about the cleaning industry and problem-solving, which led to my current position as Soft Services Manager (SSM). Over the years, my responsibilities have evolved from learning the job and company from the ground up to managing 39 sites with 33 staff across multiple postcode areas.
I advise taking every learning opportunity to progress. Although I was initially unsuccessful in applying for the SSM role, this motivated me to acquire more skills. When the opportunity arose again 12 months later, I succeeded. Since then, I've learned a lot about the management systems at Royal Mail and continue to develop my skills daily. I’ve completed mandatory courses and will soon attend the ILM 4 course to further my career.
Transitioning to the SSM role was challenging and out of my comfort zone, but I pushed myself to adapt and learn. My team and management have been supportive throughout. The biggest barrier I overcame was the initial setback in applying for the SSM role. I used the feedback to improve and shadowed my line manager to understand the role better. The key lesson I've learned is to view obstacles as challenges, keep trying, and continue learning."
