Engineering
The Engineering team is fundamental to our transformation strategy as we continuously optimise our operations. Our engineers help us to be industry leaders in automation, adopting new technologies and identifying new and efficient ways of working. They're at the forefront of technological development, innovating complete in-house solutions and leading the evolution of Royal Mail to meet the needs of today’s customers. There’s a great variety of opportunities to progress within the team, with access to training and qualifications to ensure our talented people can build a fulfilling career and achieve their goals at Royal Mail.

Delivering more
Our engineers have automated 95% of letter processing in Royal Mail, significantly increasing capacity and accuracy. But we’re still aiming higher, with a target to upgrade our parcels and letters processes to 80% automation. This drive fuels our evolution, with exciting projects like Automated Guided Vehicles (which will be the largest single fleet in Europe), our own MES (HLC) systems and advanced parcel sortation systems. Our innovative and experimental mindset spreads across the business, reflecting our values; we are being positive and brilliant, and we’re part of Britain’s future.

Typical roles
We’re looking for data-led, logical thinkers to tackle everything from day-to-day engineering challenges to complex, technologically advanced projects. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, where maintaining momentum and a can-do attitude is key. Our ambition is limitless, with no constraints on what can be created to meet our goals. Whether it's constantly improving our operations, driving research and development (R&D) or ensuring ideas become reality on time and on budget - engineering keeps Royal Mail moving forward.
As an Automation Maintenance Engineer, you’ll be crucial in keeping our mail centres and parcel hubs running smoothly. You'll handle preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on a variety of automation assets, work on improving processes, and support the Engineering Manager and team. You'll find and fix the causes of breakdowns, monitor equipment performance, and work with others to improve results. You'll also lead projects to make our systems better and work both on your own and with the team to reach our goals. You need to be a multi-skilled engineer with a minimum ONC Electrical Engineering / NVQ Level 3 qualification.
If you’re a hands-on problem-solver with first-hand experience of maintaining automation equipment, ideally Programme Logic Controllers (PLC), you can help us engineer the future of Royal Mail.
