Steps to Zero

We aim to lead by example in helping tackle the most pressing environmental challenges facing our world, especially climate change. We have set ourselves the ambitious target of achieving a 100% zero emission final mile delivery service by 2035.

Supporting our planet

As the UK’s greenest parcel delivery company*, our c.81,000 posties walk up to a billion steps a day, with just over half of our delivery routes either purely or largely on foot.

We aim to be the sustainability leader in our industry, respected by communities in every postcode and valued by our people, customers and stakeholders. To achieve this, we’ve set ourselves the ambitious target of achieving a 100% zero emission final mile by 2035. We’re already taking steps towards that goal, including:

 

  • Upgrading our Postie's diesel vans with zero-emission electric vans and micro-electric vehicles
  • Using our fleet more efficiently to support and enhance delivery walking routes
  • Embracing innovation to re-invent our how we deliver for the nation, including the use of drones for remote locations

We removed flights to Jersey and the Isle of Man and replaced them with existing road and ferry services, reducing our emissions.

In 2023, we introduced hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to replace diesel in many of our larger trucks, reducing their CO2  emissions by 90%.

Meta

Royal Mail employees chose British Heart Foundation (BHF) as our National Charity Partner from the start of 2023 until the end of 2026. Our teams have been running, baking, trekking, quizzing, cycling and much more to raise vital funds for the charity. All the funds raised for BHF are being used to deliver the Community Hearts Programme, which aims to protect heart health and save lives in our communities.
Meta

Royal Mail contributes millions to supporting good causes and issues affecting our communities. This includes our Articles for the Blind service. The service enables blind and partially sighted individuals to be sent items, such as talking books, mobility aids and relief maps, free of charge. We also support causes that are important to our employees through our matched funding programmes. We top-up the money they raise at their fundraising events and challenges.
